Alternative / Indie Rock: By the late '90s, a whole new generation had missed out on experiencing the likes of Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, and Nirvana first-hand (with some perhaps not even knowing of their existence at all), so a new crop of similarly styled bands picked up the slack, including Days of the New. Originally hailing from Charlestown, IN, before relocating to Louisville, KY, the group's leader from the get-go was singer/guitarist/songwriter Travis Meeks.R.E.M. producer Scott Litt, who signed the group to his newly formed label, Outpost, and oversaw the group's self-titled 1997 release. The album was an immediate hit with the MTV crowd on the strength of such singles as "Touch, Peel and Stand" and "The Down Town," and the group spent the summer of 1998 opening up for another one of their musical heroes, Metallica. But during the tour, rumors of an impending breakup circulated (which) proved to be true. 1999 saw the release of Days of the New's sophomore release. 2000 saw Meeks cover the Doors classic "The End" with the surviving Doors members for a taping of VH1's Storytellers series (as well as recording a studio version that appeared on the Doors tribute disc Stoned Immaculate: The Music of the Doors), as he continued writing for the third Days of the New album, with their leader now letting elements of prog rock seep into the music. ~ ~ Adapted from SITE

When her debut album, What's the 411?, hit the street in 1992, Mary J. Blige wowed critics and fans with her powerful combination of modern R&B with an edgy rap sound that came from her Yonkers, N.Y., childhood in the Schlobam housing projects.

Over time, Blige softened her style physically and vocally, reinventing her career again and again. By the time her fourth album, Mary, was released in 1999, she had matured into an expressive singer with a more developed sound, but still reflecting a strong urban style. The 2001 release of her fifth album, No More Drama, reflected more of Blige’s songwriting than any of her previous albums and showed an artist who was comfortable with herself and how far she had come.

During her career, Blige has received four American Music Awards and nine GRAMMY awards. Blige released her ninth studio album, Stronger, in November 2009.

Raised by his mother in Macon, Ga., country rocker Jason Aldean spent summers with his father in Florida. Aldean’s father introduced him to artists such as Kenny Rogers, the Gatlin Brothers and Alabama by taking him to concerts. Aldean picked up the guitar and learned to play by listening to the radio and reading chords his father had written down on paper.

Performing since the age of 14 in house bands in Georgia, Florida, and up and down the Eastern Seaboard, Aldean landed a record deal in 1998. However, this deal and another record label deal produced little career progress. About to give up on his music dreams, he landed a deal with an independent label in 2004, and has been going strong ever since with three studio albums and several hit singles. He was named the Academy of Country Music’s Top New Male Vocalist in 2006.

Two years later, the quartet returned with its fourth album, Monkey Business, the first album co-written by all the members. The album featured the hit singles "Don’t Phunk with My Heart" and "My Humps." Two years later, the hit single "Boom Boom Pow" announced the group’s return for The E.N.D.
